What Is Tākaro?

Tākaro is a fast-paced Māori language learning game perfect for anyone who is looking to increase their confidence with te reo.

Tākaro was created by the team at Game Kings in Hamilton, NZ. The idea came after they realised how few Māori games there were on the market, especially those aimed at beginners. Game Kings are continuing to develop Tākaro games with the absolute beginner in mind; no matter the age.

Each card features 8 symbols and every card has one matching symbol. The first person to find and yell out the matching symbol in Māori wins that card.

As you play the game, you will find yourself learning the words faster and using the included reference guide less.

How to Play

Shuffle the cards and deal one card face up in front of each player. Players may also like to grab a reference sheet at this point, especially for their first few rounds.

The rest of the deck is put face down into the middle of the group

One person will reveal the top card of the deck.

Players must quickly find the symbol on the centre card that matches one on their own card and yell it out, in Māori of course.

The player who does this first (and correctly) takes the card from the top of the deck. This becomes their new card which they place face up in front of them.

A new card is revealed from the deck and play continues like this until the deck is depleted.

The winner is the player with the most cards.
